"A CEMETERY IS A HISTORY OF A PEOPLE - A PERPETUAL RECORD
OF YESTERDAY AND A
SANCTUARY OF PEACE AND QUIET TODAY. A CEMETERY EXISTS BECAUSE EVERY LIFE IS
WORTH LOVING AND REMEMBERING - ALWAYS."

All Faiths Cemetery brochure, Middle Village, New York)
Houghton Keweenaw County Genealogical Society has started a multifacited cemetery project. We are trying to gleen as much information as possible concerning the existing cemeteries, with a emphasis on abandoned and long forgotten ones.
In 2002 we worked on the abandon Jewish Cemetery located northwest of Calumet (our results are shown on our website under research/projects) and we are currently working on the Hecla Cemetery in Laurium, Michigan, Houghton County.
Below are picture of the various cemeteries visited and of some stones. Click on a picture to see a larger image.
