"A CEMETERY IS A HISTORY OF A PEOPLE - A PERPETUAL RECORD
OF YESTERDAY AND A
SANCTUARY OF PEACE AND QUIET TODAY. A CEMETERY EXISTS BECAUSE EVERY LIFE IS
WORTH LOVING AND REMEMBERING - ALWAYS."

Houghton Keweenaw County Genealogical Society has started a multifacited cemetery project. We are trying to gleen as much information as possible concerning the existing cemeteries, with a emphasis on abandoned and long forgotten ones.
In 2002 we worked on the abandon Jewish Cemetery located northwest of Calumet (our results are shown on our website under research/projects) and we are currently working on the Hecla. The Hecla Cemetery in Laurium, Michigan, has been abandoned for almost a century and during that time has incurred a wealth of abuse. The only stones still standing are ones which family members have personally taken care of. Teenagers find it a good place to party and have generally abused the cemetery.
At this time we are trying to locate the less obvious stones, ones which are covered by the myrtle that has taken over the cemetery. If we can work it out, and that is a big if, we would like to restore the cemetery to it orginal dignity and make it a quiet little park.
Below are pictures of the various cemeteries visited and of some stones. Click on a picture to see a larger image.
