“The Original Identity Theft"

In genealogy, as with history, women's lives are largely invisible. Due to name changes and limited rights and opportunities women leave a very limited paper trail, making it difficult to research details of their daily lives. Houghton-Keweenaw County Genealogical Society's February meeting will feature a presentation by Jean Ellis entitled "The Original Identity Theft," showing the process of learning about the life of one woman in particular, Jean's great-great grandmother.

The meeting, which is open to the public, will take place on Tuesday, February 14, at 7:00 PM in the Community Room of the Portage Lake District Library, in Houghton . For further information, call 482-4021 or email HKCGSociety@gmail.com .

The HKCGS is now the proud owner of the HECLA CEMETERY(click for more info). The next step is to donate the cemetery to the Calumet Township to be always designated as a cemetery. The township will then be able to control access to the site allowing only foot traffic. Our Society will be working in the cemetery in the next few years, cleaning it up, recording markers, recording depressions and making it more attractive to genealogist. You can see some of the stones in the Hecla on our site by clicking on the "Cemeteries of the Keweenaw" link above. If you have any questions or have information about the Hecla to share please contact our President Avis West. The email address is HKCGSociety@gmail.com.
