Houghton Keweenaw Genealogical Society

In the spring of 2002 our Society decided to take a look at indexing a small local cemetery as a learning experience for our members. Through process of elimination, we chose a small abandoned Jewish Cemetery just west of Calumet, MI.

On a rainy June evening, the Society met at the cemetery. It was evident that the years had been hard on this small cemetery. There are few stones left and there is doubt as to how many stones there were originally. The stones which were there and readable are as follows:

Harold Warshawsky (partial/broken) Earl Arne

July 24, 1902 Sept 5, 1905 Sept. 18, 1904

Nov 15, 1902 Feb. 1, 1905

Sophia Fink Abraham Rosenbaum An enclosed area with no

Dec. 31, 1901 1915-1918 information but four distinct

Dec 9, 1905 areas of burial

We had heard several rumors about the cemetery from various sources, such as:

All buried there were children and they died during a epidemic, which turned out to be untrue.

Four sailors from a ship wreck were buried there, which turned out to be untrue (see the information on the Altman family).

That it was called the Lake View Jewish Cemetery which looks as if it could be true since it borders on the town site of Lake View.

Many stones had been stolen, which we were unable to verify.

With the information from the stones and the rumors we trudged off to the Archives at Michigan Tech to see what we could confirm.

In scanning through information on Temple Jacob, which was built in 1913, we found the "Articles of Incorporation for the Hebrew Cemetery Association of Calumet." This group was incorporated the 9th of October 1900 with President Moritz Gittler, VP Wolf Miller and Benjamin Arne as Treasurer. The Board of Directors consisted of David Horwitz (Horowitz), Mose Simon, Sam Grossman, Leo Gartner, Nathan Ruttenberg and Joseph Warsawsky. Stockholders were Nathan Ruttenberg, L.P. Levine, J. Warshawsky, Nathan Wax, Jacob Gartner, I. Sienburg, Nathan Laurie, M. Gittler, Lewis Wolfsky, Israel Bielosiozky, Leo Gartner, A.P. Oshinsky, I Greenberg, Wolf Miller, Simon Fisher, A. Abrahams, D. Horowitz, I Epstein, Louis Arne, Saul Rosenbaum, Herman Ginzberg, H. Antman, Benjamin Arne, Herman Stark and S. Grossman. This association was formed shortly after Max Gittler purchased three acres of land which adjoined the "town site" of Lake View. This is possibly why many refer to it as the Jewish Lake View Cemetery. Within a year, the cemetery was having trouble with vandelism

As far as we can determine, this cemetery was used for approximately twelve years. The more prominant people of the Jewish community, such as Jacob Gartner and Benjamin Ruttenberg, were not buried there although they died within the time frame it was in use. Since information on the tombstones was scarce, we proceeded to research the members of the association and their families. The following are the results.

Of Laurium - Calumet New May 1901 - A. Abraham conducted services for the grandmother and two daughters of the Altman family and the remains were laid to rest in the Jewish cemetery

Altman - (excursion boat from Duluth swamped and whole family drowned - fish peddler in Laurium - this was a note attached to Articles of Incorporation for Jewish cemetery). It is this family which is buried in the Jewish cemetery which started the roomer that four sailors were buried their.

May 10, 1901 - Bon Voyage, wooden packet steamer - fire Southwest Upper Entry - Bound from Duluth to Portage Lake. One source states 17 passengers and 20 crew and one states crew of 26 and 5 passengers. Drowned: Mrs. Leah Sharpe age 58, mother of Ada Altman; Ada Altman (her funeral May 16, 1901 due to fact she was not found right away); Bessie Altman age 15, daughter (reported drowned but she survived) Annie Altman age 12, daughter; Mary Altman age 7 (reported rescued but she did drown).

B. Altman had arrived from Duluth three weeks before the accident and rented rooms near the Sharpe family and started peddling fish. When Mr. Altman felt that he would do well, he sent for his family to join him and they responded that they would leave on Thursday, May 9 at 8 o'clock.

The fire started around a smoke stack of the Bon Voyage under the command of Captain Foley. Due to lack of training and practice the crew was unprepared for the emergency. But the Altman family perished mainly because they were aft while the crew, life boats and jackets were forward. The account by Bessie Altman later stated that the upper part of the boat was on fire so they had to go down and they wound up in the dining room. A cook agreed to help and rushed out. One of the rumors we heard stated that the "Jews were locked below on purpose". Whether he locked the door on purpose or it locked when it slammed will never be known. The family was trapped in the kitchen until they discovered a trap door in the ceiling. They used it as an escape route. On deck the flames prevented them from getting to the area of the boat where the crew was. In an attempt to get to the crew they had to walk on a foot wide plank on the outside of the ship. The grandmother and three girls made it safely onto the plank while Ada did not. Bessie saw her grandmother and younger sister fall into the water and they were immediately lost from view. When she released the hand of the youngest sister so she could step around a pillar, Mary also fell. The shock caused Bessie to also fall but she was later rescued. The father, Bar Altman, filed a suit against the White Line Transportation Company. The results of the suit are not known. A check at the records of the United States Circuit Court for the Northern Division of the Western District of Michigan may answer this question. [4 & 5]

JACOB GARTNER HAS PASSED AWAY - Leading merchant of Copper country succumbs to three months illness - sketch of career. Jacob Gartner, proprietor of the Gartner Department store in Hancock died a 5 o'clock this morning at his home on Harris Avenue in East Hancock, after an illness of about three months. His death was caused by enlargement of the liver, for which he was taken about a month ago to Chicago for treatment and returned apparently much improved. For several days past, however, his condition was so serious that it was no surprise when announcement was made this morning that he had passed away.

Jacob Gartner was born in Keinpen, Germany on June 15, 1843 and was in his sixty-ninth year. He came to America twenty-seven years ago and on reaching the Copper Country at once went into business as a merchant, his first store being in the former Ruhl building, corner of Hancock and Tezecuco streets, where previously A.J. Scott had a drug store. Twelve years ago, Mr. Gartner moved into palatial and extensive quarters in the new Superior Bank block on Quincy St corner of Reservation, where his business continued through efficient management until still larger quarters were needed and six years ago the capacity of the business was doubled by the erection of another building adjoining the former store, where new departments were added, and the business assumed proportions that made it one of the biggest and more extensive department stores in the uppper peninsula. A branch store was also established at Calumet, in charge of Leo Gartner, son of the deceased.

The career of Mr. Gartner reads like a romance and shows what may be accomplished of perservence, integrity and enterprise which qualities Mr. Gartner prossesed in a marked degree and made possible his rise to the emiment position that has held to the commercial life of the copper country. During the past few years Mr, Gartner had turned over the active management of the store to his son, Isidore, the clothing department being transfered to Stern and Field with Hugo m. Field, son-in-law of Mr. Gartner, in charge, and the furniture department, one of the most extensive in the copper country, in charge of S. Seegal. The store will be closed in every department until after the funeral.

Mr. Gartner is survived by his wife, two sons, Leo of Calumet and Isidor of Hancock, and two daughters, Mrs. Hugo M. Field and Mrs. E. Wolstein. He also leaves a sister in Germany. He was a member of the Hancock Elks and of the Order of Baal Bith.

The remains of Mr. Gartner will be sent Sunday afternoon by way of the Copper Range and St. Paul railways to Milwaukee where the interment will take place Monday.

Obit of Ida- MRS. IDA O'SHINSKY DIED AT AGE OF 103 Oldest Resident of City has been in remarkable good health until illness developed ten days Ago, Funeral in Chicago. Hancock's oldest resident, Mrs. Ida O'Shinsky, died at her home on Franklin street yesterday, aged 103 years. She had been a resident of Hancock for twenty years. She was born in Russia and came to the United States with her family following the death of her husband. She resided for many years in Oil City, PA before comming to Hancock. The late Mrs. O'Shinsky's survival for more than a century is attributed to her hardy constitution and regular habits of living. She never had been seriously ill until ten days ago, when weakness developed and a gradual decline followed, ending in her death yesterday. She had the possession of all her faculties and up to the time of her fatal illness was able to walk unaided. She is survived by one son. I. Miller of Houghton, two daughters, Mrs. Samuel Maurence of Calumet and Mrs. Mintz of Oil City, PA and a number of grandchildren, including Harry and Ike O'Shinsky of Hancock. A. P. O'Shinksy, a son, died here several months ago. The remains of the late Mrs. O'Shinsky will be taken to Chicago this afternoon. The funeral will be in that city.
