In the fall of 1999 a small group of local hobbyists, with a common interest in genealogy, formed the Houghton Keweenaw County Genealogical Society. The intent was to help preserve local resources and promote family research. In a short time we had our constitution, mission statement, and officers in place. We are actively engaged in service and research projects related to local family history, hoping eventually to publish findings that may be used by others in tracing their Houghton and Keweenaw County roots.

Today our society has both local and away members. Our research interests extend to Croatia, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Scotland, Cornwall, England, France, Russia, Finland, and Scandinavian countries, as well as French-Canadian, Native American, and other roots throughout the United States and Canada. Whether tracing family who lived in the Keweenaw Peninsula, or using area resources to trace ancestors all over the world, anyone with an interest in genealogy is encouraged to join us.

Interesting Discoveries

Genealogy can be many things, but it is always interesting. However, some discoveries are particularly interesting or even exciting-a real "Wow!" moment. It may be when a family legend is debunked, a long lost ancestor is finally found, or maybe that first real genealogy "find". At the April meeting of the Houghton Keweenaw County Genealogical Society we will be sharing interesting or unusual research discoveries. Come share with us the moments that have made your hobby especially fun, and hopefully be inspired by others' findings.

The meeting will take place at 7:00 pm, Tuesday, April 8, at the Portage Lake District Library on the Houghton waterfront and is open to the public. Anyone who would like to become a member or is interested in learning more about genealogy is encouraged to attend. The meeting will be a work bee, preparing the Society's newspaper index CD for release and distribution. All members are encouraged to attend and lend a helping hand with this important project.
The general educational meeting will be preceded by a business meeting at 6:30 PM for Society members. If you have any questions, or would like information on becoming a member of the society, please call 482-4021 or email avislouise@sbcglobal.net.

DMG PROJECT UPDATE: 70,000 entries in the database!
VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED!

The HKCGS is over a year into this exciting project. The process of indexing the DAILY MINING GAZETTE early years (about 1913 to 196?) is going great. We are indexing (BMDs) Births, Deaths, and Marriages, along with some special events. We still can use help paging through the bounded gazettes looking for BMDs. If interested please contact Avis .

A side benefit of helping with the indexing is reading through the old articles and looking at the ads. Looking at what was published years ago you realize how much times have changed. Try it just once, you will be hooked and come back for more! Any amount of time you can spare will help! Thank you in advance.
